The Path To Freedom is Protecting Motorcyclists RightsFor almost as long as there have been motorcycles, there have been groups and individuals dedicated to ensuring that the rights of motorcyclists are represented fairly and protected. While in the early years of the motorcycle, public perceptions were mild compared to those of today and as far back as 50 or even 60 years ago.

There is a great deal of issues and legal concerns that encompass the motorcycle and the people who ride them, and while many issues are centered around safety, accident prevention and related legislation, there is an equally important list if issues that impact the freedoms of those individuals who ride motorcycles and live a lifestyle that evolves around the motorcycle and its culture.

While there are multiple battle lines drawn separating motorcyclists and legislators on numerous current laws and pending legislation at both the state and federal level, at the core of many of these legal debates lies one fact that ties them all together, and that is lawmakers and their agents are using political power with support from their constituents to enact and enforce laws that more times than not impinge and violate the personal freedoms of motorcyclists and remove their right to choose.

To protect the personal freedom of motorcyclists throughout the years many local, state and national pro-motorcyclists groups have been formed to publicly address issues, laws and legislation that adversely effect and impact the rights and freedoms of motorcyclists by using the legal system to magnify their collective voice and bring public attention to the press, and government officials in a responsible manner.

In 1971 Lou Kimsey, editor for Easyriders magazine made a public plea in the magazine for bikers to join together to fight against legislation aimed at motorcyclists. In 1972 ABATE (A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments) was formed and state charters were rapidly being created.

Since 1972 ABATE and other organizations banned together to take on important issues faced by the collective motorcycle populous. While there is a large number of laws and legislation that negatively impact motorcyclists in general, there is also a great many positive changes that have been made to protect the rights of motorcyclists because of the hard work and dedication by motorcycle rights groups and their relentless ability to work with lawmakers to get these beneficial laws passed.

With so much accomplished by ABATE and other MRO’s (motorcycle rights organizations) to secure the rights and freedoms of anyone who rides a motorcycle there is still much that needs to be done, and the only way to be heard is to ban together and raise your voice!
